New way to submit announcements

Community members can advertise their upcoming event, meeting or class on the Soundoff! community announcements page by visiting ftmeade.army.mil and clicking on the Public Affairs Office tab and calling the listed phone number or emailing larry.whitley.civ@mail.mil.

Requests should be submitted at least two weeks before the date of the event, meeting or class.

NEWS & EVENTS

VCC hours

Operating hours at the Demps Visitor Control Center are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 902 Reece Road.

The VCC is closed weekends and from 7 a.m. to noon on the third Wednesday of each month for training.

All individuals who do not have a DoD-issued identification card must go to the VCC for a day pass.

Visit the VCC at least 10 business days in advance to apply for a long-term access pass.

Visitors who arrive on post when the VCC is closed must be escorted on post by an authorized DoD cardholder. This includes weekends and federal holidays.

Exchange facilities to shift hours

As a result of limited staffing due to the federal hiring freeze, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service is reducing hours of operation at the following restaurants on Fort Meade:

    • Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Saturday and Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Domino’s Pizza
    • Monday to Saturday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Sunday: Closed
  • Charley’s Grilled Subs
    • Monday to Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    • Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Boston Market
    • Monday to Sunday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Arby’s
    • Monday to Friday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
    • Saturday and Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We are working very hard to maintain operations throughout the duration of the hiring freeze by increasing part-time employees’ hours,” Exchange General Manager Joanne Cahalan said.

“We will continue to shift resources to maintain services during peak hours, and thank the community for their patience and understanding.

“We look forward to resuming regular hours as soon as possible.”

Walk-in attorney consultations

The Fort Meade Legal Assistance Division of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides walk-in attorney consultations on Tuesdays beginning at 8 a.m.

Each consultation slot is 30 minutes.

Clients may be scheduled for a follow-up appointment if the 30-minute consult time is insufficient to address all legal issues.

Consults will not be provided for domestic relations matters, wills or other estate planning documents.

The number of walk-in slots are limited.

Citizenship appointments

Army Community Service will host a Joint Services seminar with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Office of Baltimore.

United States of America Citizenship Appointments is today from 4:30-6 p.m. at ACS, 830 Chisholm Ave.

The free seminar is open to service members, retirees, DoD civilian employees and their family members.

Preregistration is required.

Appointments are scheduled in 15-minute increments. The final appointment is at 5:45 p.m.

Bring the following to your appointment:

  • Supporting documentation
  • Letters received from USCIS Office
  • Forms to be completed

RAB meeting

Fort Meade will conduct a Restoration Advisory Board meeting on March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott, 2700 Hercules Road, Annapolis Junction.

RAB meetings are held to keep the public informed of Fort Meade’s environmental cleanup and restoration program, and provide opportunities for public involvement and open discussion.

Major topics for this meeting include annual updates on various long-term monitoring sites.

Members of the public and the media are invited.

Right Arm Night

Bring your right arm service member, co-worker or employee to Club Meade for a fun evening of free food, music, dancing, prizes and camaraderie on March 16 from 4-6 p.m.

Child care providers needed

Family child care providers are needed.

Providers will receive training including: activity organization, USDA approved meal planning, designing learning environments, child development and becoming infant/child/adult first aid & CPR certified.

Technical Job Fair

The Fort Meade Technical Job Fair will be held March 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Club Meade, 6600 Mapes Road.

The free event is open to all job seekers.

More than 65 employers will attend. Bring resumes.

Candidates with security clearance are encouraged to attend.

A “resume doctor” will provide free resume evaluation and preparation assistance.

A shuttle bus will take job seekers from the Visitor Control Center at the Reece Road gate to the front door of Club Meade and back.

Tax preparation services

Free income tax preparation services are offered through April 18 at the Fort Meade Joint Installation Tax Center at 4217 Roberts Ave.

Free tax preparation and e-filing will be provided for active-duty service members, retirees and dependents who are valid ID cardholders.

Prize drawing

Each month through April, Leisure Travel Services offers customer appreciation prize drawings.

Patrons must enter each month to be eligible to win. No purchase is necessary.

Winners are drawn on the last day of the month.

  • March: Win four tickets (two adults and two children) to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore or the B&O Railroad Museum.
  • April: Win four tickets (two adults and two children) to Medieval Times in Arundel Mills.

Flea Market

Fort Meade’s indoor Flea Market opens May 6 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Pavilion.

Admission is free and is open to patrons with access to the installation.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Post Thrift Shop’s monthly Saturday Sale at its new location across from the Pavilion.

Vendor spaces are limited. Each 8-foot by 8-foot space includes one table and two chairs. An additional table costs $5.

Vendor space cost $15 in advance through May 3.

Registration at the door costs $20.

Non DoD cardholders must preregister by April 20. Preregistration will authorize entry onto the installation.

EDUCATION

Senior Service College Fellowship

The U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center is accepting applications for the 2017-18 SSCF program through March 23.

The SSCF program is a 10-month educational opportunity conducted under the auspices of the Defense Acquisition University at Aberdeen Proving Ground; Huntsville, Ala.; and Warren, Mich.

The fellowship is open to permanent Department of the Army acquisition civilians in grades GS-14/15 or broadband equivalents.

Non-Army personnel may apply and must submit their applications in accordance with the Army DACM process.

Judges needed

Judges are needed for the Solley Elementary Science Fair on March 22 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the school at 7608 Solley Road in Glen Burnie.

See what Solley students are investigating and creating in science and STEM classes.

Refreshments will be provided for all judges.

Arrive at 8 a.m., noon or 4 p.m. to learn how to judge. Spend 1.5 hours evaluating projects using a rubric.

You will meet with other judges and select your top three projects for each grade.

LIBRARY

Anne Arundel County Public Library is offering events to mark Women’s History Month. The programs, held at nine libraries, run through March 25.

Events include a series celebrating outstanding Hispanic women at the Annapolis Regional Library.

On April 4 at 6:30 p.m., the program will focus on the accomplishments of local Hispanic women who have enhanced the quality of life in the community.

Spring Maryland Home & Garden Show will be held this weekend at Maryland State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Road, Timonium. Hours are: Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Features include improvement exhibits, craft show, orchid show, wine tasting, seminars, bouquet giveaways and a petting zoo.
