How to submit announcements

Community members can advertise their upcoming event, meeting or class on the Soundoff! community announcements page by visiting www.ftmeade.army.mil and clicking on the Press Center tab.

Once you are in the Fort Meade Press Center, click on PA services, story or promotion request and electronic inquiry form.

Inquiry forms should be submitted at least two weeks before the date of the event, meeting or class.

NEWS & EVENTS

VCC hours

Operating hours at the Demps Visitor Control Center are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 902 Reece Road.

The VCC is closed weekends and from 7 a.m. to noon on the third Wednesday of each month for training.

All individuals who do not have a DoD-issued identification card must go to the VCC for a day pass.

Visit the VCC at least 10 business days in advance to apply for a long-term access pass.

Visitors who arrive on post when the VCC is closed must be escorted on post by an authorized DoD cardholder. This includes weekends and federal holidays.

Walk-in legal consultations

The Fort Meade Legal Assistance Division of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate will provide walk-in attorney consultations on Tuesday mornings in January beginning at 8 a.m. at 4217 Morrison St., Suite 120.

Each consultation slot is 30 minutes.

Clients may be scheduled for a follow-up appointment if the 30-minute consult time is insufficient to address all legal issues, which is likely for domestic relations matters.

If you are seeking a child support calculation, bring current pay statements for yourself and your spouse as well as monthly child care costs.

The consults will not be provided for wills or other estate planning documents.

The number of walk-in slots are limited.

All interested parties should come to the Legal Assistance Division on Tuesday mornings to be scheduled for a walk-in consultation.

MLK celebration meal

The Freedom Inn Dining Facility will provide a special meal today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Service members, civilian DoD employees, retirees and contractors are welcome.

Hours are 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. for active-duty service members and 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. for civilian personnel.

Cost is $5.55.

The menu includes: blackened catfish, corn on the cob, New Orleans shrimp, dirty rice. Chicken Creole, spicy collard greens, sweet potatoes, jalepeno cornbread, chicken gumbo, and desserts.

MLK Day observance

The Fort Meade garrison’s Dr. Martin Luther King Day holiday observance will be held Jan. 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Club Meade, 6600 York Road.

This year’s theme is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off.”

The observance, hosted by the garrison’s Equal Opportunity Office, will feature the Largo High School Choir of Upper Marlboro.

To honor King’s legacy of service to others, organizations will be available to offer volunteer opportunities.

Voncile Farmer, Fort Meade’s Volunteer Corps Program manager, and Diane Sancilio, director of volunteer services for Hospice of the Chesapeake, will talk about volunteer opportunities within the Fort Meade community and at the nonprofit organization.

Tax preparation services

Beginning Jan. 23, free income tax preparation services will be offered at the Fort Meade Joint Installation Tax Center at 4217 Morrison St.

Free tax preparation and e-filing will be provided for active-duty service members, retirees and dependents who are valid ID cardholders.

Newcomers Orientation

Army Community Service will now host the Newcomers Orientation briefing every other week.

But during the months of May through September, which are considered high peak for service members undergoing a PCS move, the briefing will be held every week.

This will assist in eliminating a backlog and will provide a smooth transition for service members experiencing a PCS move.

Newcomers Orientation briefings are currently scheduled for the following dates: Jan. 25, Feb. 1, Feb. 8 and Feb. 22.

Freedom Inn open to post employees

The Freedom Inn Dining Facility, located at 8502 Simonds St., is open to all active-duty service members, military retirees, DoD civilians, contractors, and Department of the Army security guards and firefighters on Monday through Friday.

Active-duty service members on Basic Allowance for Subsistence are also authorized for meals on the weekend. Family members of military personnel may purchase meals on weekdays if accompanied by the service member.

Out & About

BOSS ski trip for single service members is Saturday through Monday at Liberty Mountain Ski Resort in Pennsylvania. Cost is $175 and includes transportation, meals, lodging, lift tickets and equipment rental. Payment plans are available.

Orioles FanFest will be held Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Baltimore Convention Center, 1 W. Pratt St. Admission is $12 for adults and $6 for seniors and youths ages 14 and younger.

Polar Bear Plunge will be held Jan. 28 at 1 and 3 p.m. at Sandy Point State Park, 1100 E. College Parkway, Annapolis. Plungers take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland.

Participants must pledge or pay $75 and will receive a commemorative 21st Annual Plunge sweatshirt. Pee Wee and Family Plunge is Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. Cost is $50.
