Community members can advertise their upcoming event, meeting or class on the Soundoff! community announcements page by visiting www.ftmeade.army.mil and clicking on the Public Affairs Office tab and calling the listed phone number or emailing larry.whitley.civ@mail.mil.

Requests should be submitted at least two weeks before the date of the event, meeting or class.

NEWS & EVENTS

VCC hours

Operating hours at the Demps Visitor Control Center are Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 902 Reece Road.

The VCC is closed weekends and from 7 a.m. to noon on the third Wednesday of each month for training.

All individuals who do not have a DoD-issued identification card must go to the VCC for a day pass.

Visit the VCC at least 10 business days in advance to apply for a long-term access pass.

Visitors who arrive on post when the VCC is closed must be escorted on post by an authorized DoD cardholder. This includes weekends and federal holidays.

VCC holiday hours

The Demps Visitor Control Center will close two hours early on Friday for the Memorial Day weekend.

The VCC will be open Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be closed Monday.

Regular operating hours will resume Tuesday.

Safety Expo

Fort Meade’s annual Safety, Health and Wellness Expo is today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fort Meade Pavilion.

The event will feature over 65 tables presented by local, state and federal agencies, as well as area businesses, offering a wide range of safety, health and wellness information and interactive activities.

Displays will focus on motorcycle safety, fire safety, alcohol & drug prevention, personal protective equipment, recreation safety, fitness and nutrition.

The event also will feature a drunk driving road test and Fatal Vision Alcohol and Drug Impairment Simulation Goggles.

The U.S. Army Field Band is the hosting unit for the program.

Spouse Orientation & Tour – Summer Series

Army Community Service is offering Spouse Orientation Sessions for newly arrived military spouses on June 9, June 23, July 14, July 28, Aug. 11 and Aug. 25.

Sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Each session is free and features a 90-minute briefing and a 2.5-hour “windshield tour” of Fort Meade, including a stop at the Exchange.

100th Anniversary Gala

Fort Meade’s 100th Anniversary Gala is June 17 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at Club Meade, 6600 Mapes Road.

Event will feature USO Show Troupe performances, themed rooms, historical attractions and live music.

Dinner includes a catered food buffet and a cash bar.

Attire is formal for military and semiformal for civilians.

Tickets cost $100 for general admission; $85 for DoD ID cardholders; and $45 for enlisted ranks 1-4.

TSP presentation

A presentation on the Thrift Savings Plan for civilian employees will be held June 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Post Theater.

Freedom Inn open to post employees

The Freedom Inn Dining Facility, located at 8502 Simonds St., is open to all active-duty service members, military retirees, DoD civilian employees, contractors, and Department of the Army security guards and firefighters on Monday through Friday.

Active-duty service members on Basic Allowance for Subsistence are also authorized for meals on the weekend. Family members of military personnel may purchase meals on weekdays if accompanied by the service member.

All other categories of customers may purchase meals as the garrison commander deems appropriate. These categories include youth groups, MEPS candidates, civilian dignitaries, guests and other visitors.

Service members with a meal card will continue to have priority over cash-paying customers.

Walk-in attorney consultations

The Fort Meade Legal Assistance Division of the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides walk-in attorney consultations on Tuesdays beginning at 8 a.m.

A follow-up appointment may be rescheduled for a different day for the client if the short walk-in consult time is insufficient to address all legal issues, which is likely for domestic relations matters.

If you are seeking a child support calculation, bring current pay statements for yourself and your spouse as well as monthly child care cost figures.

The consults will not be provided for wills or other estate planning documents.

The number of walk-in slots are limited.

Military Corps Career Connect training

Solider For Life-Transition Assistance Program is the military’s way of taking care of its own, either directly or through partnerships with other organizations that focus on employment and career opportunities for military veterans.

The Military Corps Career Connect (C3) initiative from Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation will offer 16 weeks of Amazon Web Services Cloud Support Associate Training for up to 15 selected candidates.

Deadline for applying is Wednesday.

C3 covers the cost of training for those accepted into the initiative. Priority is given to transitioning service members.

Training is also open to active-duty military spouses, who have relocated in the last 48 months, and to veterans who have separated within the last 48 months.

YOUTH

Summer Reading Program

The Fort Meade Summer Reading Program will be held June 20 to Aug. 18 at the Medal of Honor Memorial Library, 4418 Llewellyn Ave.

The theme is “Reading by Design.”

The program is for youths in the Fort Meade community from preschool up to age 17.

Registration begins June 20. Families can register online at https://fortmeade.beanstack.org. Click “Register an Individual or Family.”

Youths must read for 15 minutes per day for seven days to reach the first goal of 105 minutes, then 15 minutes per day for seven more days to reach the next goal of 210 minutes.

There are six goals. After the youth has logged in the minutes, a colorful badge will pop up once the participant has reached each goal.

Youths can then come to the library to receive their prize. The final day to turn in reading logs and to collect prizes is Aug. 18.

Driver’s Education: July 10-21 from 3-6:15 p.m.

Registration is open from June 12 to July 3. Class is open to teens ages 15 and 9 months to 18 years old. Cost is $320.

Guitar lessons for ages 6-18 are held Wednesdays or Fridays from 4-7:30 p.m. at the Youth Center. Cost is $120 per month.

Piano lessons for ages 6-18 are held Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Youth Center. Cost is $100 per month.

The project is dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of wounded warriors and veterans through fly fishing, fly tying and outings.

American Legion Post 276 is open to veterans and active-duty service members at 8068 Quarterfield Road in Severn.
