Fort Meade Run Series

The 2017 Fort Meade Run Series returns Saturday with the Earth Day 5K at Burba Lake Park.

The run series is open to all military services and ranks and to civilians. Pets are not permitted.

Each run starts at 8 a.m. and features a 1-mile walk.

All runs include male and female divisions in various age categories. Medal ceremony begins at 9 a.m.

  • Earth Day 5K: Saturday, 8 a.m. at Burba Lake Park
  • Run to Honor 5K /10K: May 20, 8 a.m. at Murphy Field House
  • Army Birthday 5K: June 10, 8 a.m. at the Fort Meade Pavilion
  • Tank Corps Joe 5K: Oct. 28, 8 a.m. at the Fort Meade Pavilion
  • Turkey Trot 5K: Nov. 18, 8 a.m. at Murphy Field House

Runners without DoD ID cards must be a guest of an authorized runner. They may only participate if a family member or friend can register them for the run under the host’s name and drive them onto the installation.

Running groups must preregister for each run. The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation will not assist any group with gaining access to Fort Meade.

At least one person must be an authorized ID cardholder with access to Fort Meade who may register the running group and get all runners onto the installation.

Preregistration fees cost $18 for an individual; $54 for a family of three to six participants; $96 for a group of seven to 10; and $70 per person for the entire series.

Registration for the entire series closes April 11.

All preregistered runners will receive a T-shirt.

Onsite registration will be from 7-7:45 a.m. Pay by cash or check only.

Cost for individual runners is $25. Cost per family (of three to six runners) is $70.

T-shirts not available for onsite registrants.

Youth Sports registration

Youth Sports is registering for the 2017 spring season.

Spring sports include soccer, NFL Flag Football, MLB PlayBall, lacrosse, T-ball Clinic, NFL Flag Clinic, Lacrosse Clinic and Ready Set Run.

Volunteer coaches are needed for all sports. Volunteers receive free training and receive a discount on sports fees for their children.

Lifeguarding classes

The American Red Cross is offering lifeguard training Tuesday through April 14; and May 13, 14, 20 and 21. Classes meet 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April course meets from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Course includes complete Red Cross certification, first aid and CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator).

Registration fee is $250.

Participants must register in person at Gaffney Fitness Center.

Youth boxing classes

Child and Youth Services offers boxing classes for ages 6 and older Monday and Friday evenings at the Youth Center.

This new program will teach boxing techniques.

Capitals Street Team

The Washington Capitals, CGI and Leveling the Playing Field are sponsoring a fun-filled day of activities for military families with the Capitals Street Team on April 29 from noon to 2 p.m. at 9170 Brookville Road, Silver Spring.

Leveling the Playing Field provides free sporting equipment to families in need, so everyone can play sports.

Attendees also will meet Slapshot, and Capitals alumni Paul Mulvey and Errol Rausse and enjoy a provided lunch.

EFMP Bowling

The Exceptional Family Member Program’s next bowling event is May 17 from 5:30-7 p.m. at The Lanes.

The event is held the third Wednesday of every month.

Exceptional family members bowl one game at no charge with free shoe rental.

One discounted game and shoes at a cost of $2 each are available to other family members.

Pre-Natal Yoga Class

Gaffney Fitness Center has added a new class for moms-to-be: Pre-Natal Yoga on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m.

This class will help expectant mothers safely explore poses to build strength, work with flexibility and support their ever-changing body.

Breath practice will be integrated to find ease and calm the mind as they prepare for birth.

The class also will address common pregnancy discomforts as well as benefits for baby and mom.

All classes will end with relaxation time.

All levels, trimesters and partners are welcome.

Free summer camp

The National Military Family Association’s Operation Purple free camps are open to military children with a parent or guardian from any service branch.

Camp Sandy Cove runs from Aug. 6-13 near Winchester, Va.

Priority is given to children who have a parent or guardian who incurred service-related injuries or illness on or after 9/11, or whose parent or guardian will be deployed during a 15-month deployment window.

Functional Fitness area

Gaffney Fitness Center has added a new Functional Fitness area for eligible patrons.

Functional Training is based on the concept of moving away from isolating muscle groups on machines, to performing exercises that target a variety of muscle groups in movements that mimic everyday activities.

Renovations to Gaffney’s racquetball courts are already underway for two functional fitness training rooms.

They include: TRX suspension rack, TRX training equipment, Plyo Boxes, sandbags and kettlebells, new impact-resistant flooring, bumper plates, Olympic weight platforms, squat racks and pull-up bars.

Gaffney Fitness Center offers a variety of aerobics classes.

Get your heart rate up at this intense workout.

Patrons can purchase a punch card or just drop in and pay as they go.

Dollar Day

Dollar Day is offered at The Lanes every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Tae Kwon Do

Child and Youth Services offers a Tae Kwon Do class Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Youth Center.

Classes for ages 4 to 6 cost $45 per month. Classes for ages 7-17 cost $85 per month.

Personal trainers at Gaffney

Gaffney Fitness Center offers personal training programs for those who are eligible to use the facility.

Individual or two-person sessions are available.

Individual performance training cost is $35 for one hour; $165 for five one-hour sessions; and $300 for 10 one-hour sessions.

Two-person training cost is $20 per person for one hour; $18 per person for five one-hour sessions; and $16 per person for 10 one-hour sessions.

Thirty-minute training cost is half the fee for all sessions listed above.

Clients will be contacted directly by the personal trainers to schedule a consultation, to determine the client’s fitness goals and to determine which package works best.

Training sessions will be scheduled directly with the personal trainer.

The Lanes at Fort Meade offers free bowling for all active-duty military units on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Murphy 24-hour fitness facility

Murphy Field House offers unmanned extended hours after normal operating hours.

Murphy is open to authorized registered patrons ages 18 and older to utilize the cardio equipment and Nautilus weight machines.

The free weights, basketball and racquetball courts are NOT open during unmanned hours.

The facility is unmanned, so exercise responsibly and come with a buddy.

Murphy is fully equipped with surveillance cameras. All users will be monitored at all times while in the facility.

Registration is required to gain access to the facility by fingerprint reader.

Pick up a registration form at Gaffney Fitness Center or Murphy Field House and submit the completed form to the facility in advance so your information is in the system when you come for your appointment at Gaffney to enter your fingerprint for entrance to the facility.

Volunteer coaches needed

Volunteer Youth Sports coaches are needed in the various sports programs offered throughout the year.

All volunteers will receive free training and will be certified through the National Alliance of Youth Sports.

All volunteers must complete a background check.

Youth Sports Program:

  • Fall season: August through October

Texas Hold ‘Em Tournaments

All service members and civilians are invited to play in the Texas Hold ‘Em Tournaments held Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the Lounge at the Lanes.

The tournament is free to enter. Prizes are awarded for the top winners.
