  • Jan. 26, Non-injury hit-and-run traffic accident: A driver backed out of a marked parking space in a parking lot on Ernie Pyle Street, struck a parked car and unattended vehicle, and departed the scene. The driver later contacted DES to explain he did not stop to leave identifying information on the damaged vehicle because he had to respond to a family emergency. The driver was cited for unsafe backing and duty upon striking an unattended vehicle.
  • Jan. 26, Non-injury traffic accident: A driver at the intersection of Rockenbach Road and Cooper Avenue diverted his attention from the road to pick up a pair of dropped glasses and struck a stopped vehicle ahead of him. The driver’s vehicle sustained major damage and was towed. The driver was cited for failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
  • Jan. 30, Non-injury traffic accident: A driver failed to stop for a vehicle ahead of him, which was stopped to allow cross-traffic to clear at the intersection of Cooper Avenue and Mapes Road. The driver thought the vehicle ahead of him had already merged onto Mapes Road. His vehicle sustained major damage and was towed. The driver was cited for failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
  • Jan. 30, Accidental damage to private property: A shopping cart at the Exchange accidentally blew into the bumper of a parked vehicle.
  • Jan. 30, Shoplifting: A dependent family member attempted to steal food at the commissary but was stopped before leaving the store.
  • Jan. 31, Shoplifting: AAFES loss prevention personnel at the Exchange stated that she observed via surveillance camera the subject concealing Skullcandy headphones, and Astroglide and Trojan lubricants on her person and exiting the store without rendering payment.
  • Jan. 31, Vandalism: DES responded to reported vandalism in the Freedom Center barracks parking lot that involved damage to a parked sedan. Anybody with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Fort Meade Police at 301-677-6622 or 301-677-6623.
  • Feb. 2, Possible larceny: An unknown individual broke into a storage shed in the Normandy Bluffs housing area, attempted to break into the house, and took two bikes, a barbecue grill and multiple other items.   • Feb. 2, Damage to private property: DES responded to a report of damage to private property in the DISA parking lot, involving the shattering of an SUV’s rear window. Anybody with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Fort Meade Police at 301-677-6622 or 301-677-6623.
  • Feb. 3, Damage to private property: DES responded to reported damage to private property in the Potomac Place housing area, involving damage to a parked SUV. Investigation continues.   • Feb. 3, Shoplifting: Loss prevention personnel at the Exchange stated that via closed circuit TV she witnessed the subject picking up a black Adidas hat and exiting the store without rendering payment.
  • Jan. 29 to Feb. 4, DES conducted the following traffic stops (among others): 18 for failing to stop at a stop sign or flashing red light; 37 for speeding including two in school zones; and two for using a cellphone while driving without hands-free device (both ticketed).

DES Driving Tip of the Week: Drivers must remain alert for pedestrians entering the roadway and stop for all pedestrians at marked crosswalks. Pedestrians must cross roadways only at marked crosswalks and ensure all traffic is clear or stopped before entering the roadway.
